It's an ability that the Xingese royalty and warriors are trained in, and it's also the central theory behind the alchemy that May practices. This means is that she can sense the life energies in the world around her and read the natures of those energies. And track their movements using that energy flow, too.
WHAT THIS MOSTLY MEANS FOR EVERYONE ELSE is that she can tell if someone isn't human or isn't totally human. She won't know what they are exactly, but she'll be able to tell if they are or aren't human.
